The theme for our meditation on this Sunday, in the solemnity of the Holy Trinity is: God the Trinity. In the fifth grade religion class, the teacher asked his students, “What does it mean the Holy Trinity, the one God in three persons?” He was waiting for an answer from them. But after five minutes of waiting and no response, he asked them to take it as homework. The students seemed unable to answer that question.

There was a particular student named Sandro, as the class leader for all his friends, giving an instruction that each student wrote in the assignment book only one answer, which was as the following: “We continue asking the meaning of the Holy Trinity, yet we don’t have its answer now and we don’t need to know either. The important thing is we can say His name and believe in Him. “

A common difficulty for all believers is not knowing and not having a satisfied understanding about the Blessed Trinity. We memorize the name “Trinity”. We say such name in prayers and worships. We celebrate His feast and solemnity. We have been in unity with Him from the moment of our baptisms and then strengthened in the Sacrament of Confirmation. But our knowledge about Him is very limited. We will not be satisfied learning about Him. So the answer would be like what the common answer is, that we do not know now, or there’s no need to know as perfect as expected!

We all do not know exactly how or what the circumstances, cooperation, life in common of the one God and three persons are like. No scripture account or tradition explains so clearly about them. We know what He is like because the Lord Jesus Himself spoke and taught in the Gospels. He says that the Holy Trinity is a great mystery of our faith, namely the inseparable communion of the Three Persons of God. Jesus’ task is to reveal the glory of God to us: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, and to unite all of us with God in one fellowship of love. The fellowship of love in the world is the Holy Church.

The final goal which we all believers will attain is to enter into perfect fellowship in the eternal glory of the holy Trinity. The mission of Jesus and the Holy Spirit is the same, because Jesus says that it is the Holy Spirit who will teach us in all truth and the truth about God is the great mystery of the Holy Trinity. Like the school children mentioned earlier, if we don’t get a complete answer or if our knowledge is still limited, we can just be patient with humility. Later we will have it. The important thing is that we must not lose faith and obedience to the holy Trinity in whom we dwell and grow day after day.

Let’s pray. In the name of the Father … O holy Trinity, may God the Father protect and fill us with all mercy, may God the Son unite and save us and may God the Holy Spirit continue to teach and enlighten us in all truth. Glory to the Father … In the name of the Father …
